Boys’ Day Out: Your Guide to a Fun Cornhole Tournament with Your Friends

Play poker and drink beer. Head out early and go fishing. Go to a sports bar and just hang out. What else can you do with the boys on a weekend? Here’s something you might not have thought of: play a friendly cornhole tournament.

You’ll be outdoors, getting competitive and enjoying a fun Americana game. And you might not need to spend much because you can do this activity in your backyard.

How do you make it exciting?

Get the Right Cornhole Equipment

When organizing your own cornhole tournament, you need a space where you can set up a court. The place should be a rectangular area that is eight to 10 feet wide and at least 40 to 45 feet long. Don’t forget to have pitcher’s boxes and foul lines. Each side must have cornhole boards, too.

Make the game extra special by customizing your cornhole boards using vinyl wraps. You can use different designs for each board. For example, the images on the cornhole boards can represent your teams. You can choose from abstract designs to other interesting images.

The size of your cornhole board should be 47.5 to 48 inches by 23.5 to 24. The hole must be six inches in diameter. When it comes to the bags, use the ones made from durable fabric. They should contain about two cups of feed corn.

Don’t Forget the Grub and the Drinks

You’re sure to work up an appetite after a game. So make sure you’ve got enough food and drinks for the guys. But don’t just do the usual pizza and beer or burgers and beer.

Why not get creative with a delicious spread of pub-inspired grub? Do fried cheesy polenta chips, salt and pepper beef, chicken, leeks, and bacon pie, and an apple crumble. Pair these tasty snacks with cold beer, red wine, or a selection of spirits. For the nondrinkers, offer up ginger ale or soda.

If you’re worried about preparing and cooking the dishes, you can go with a simple menu. Use ingredients that don’t easily spoil, especially in warm weather. For example, pasta salad is an ideal meal for an outdoor get-together. Simply toss the pasta, olive oil, vegetables, and meat of your choice, and you’re done. It’s not only easy to make, but it’s also healthier.

Alternatively, you can get take out from a favorite restaurant so you don’t have to spend time in the kitchen.

Winners Take Home Prizes

a trophy

What’s a tournament without prizes? Although it is a friendly game, consider preparing some prizes for the winning teams; prizes also make for an alluring concept to the entire activity. Guys are generally competitive, and the promise of a prize is motivation enough to join.

You can do a trophy, but you can also try other prizes, like fishing gear, golf clubs, or a beer brewing kit. The winner can also keep the cornhole boards until your next game.

Your day out with the boys does not have to be the usual get-together. Get creative. Throw some ideas around. And make sure that everyone has fun.
